Rossi Architects were engaged by Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School in Zuccoli to develop an outdoor play and learning environment master plan strategy for its rapidly growing school community. With ample green space available across the campus, the school looked to the design team to investigate transformative opportunities and elevate the site's natural potential. Following a series of robust, highly collaborative workshops with students, staff, and the parent community, the design team established a framework of targeted thematic interventions. These outcomes centre on key priorities: introducing water play elements, maximising shade, regenerating the natural landscape, facilitating outdoor curriculum delivery, strengthening Catholic identity, and embedding authentic opportunities for Larrakia cultural representation and learning.
In contemporary primary education, the outdoor environment is increasingly recognised as a vital "third teacher", an active participant in the learning journey alongside educators and peers. Unstructured and structured outdoor spaces provide indispensable sensory experiences that indoor classrooms cannot replicate. By transitioning learning beyond four walls, students engage in experiential, multi-sensory inquiry that promotes risk-taking, physical resilience, and spatial awareness. Designing dedicated external learning domains ensures that movement, outdoor investigation, and environmental stewardship become seamless extensions of the daily curriculum.
Central to the master plan's ethos is the principle of investigative play, where children learn through discovery, trial, and direct interaction with natural elements. Rich, open-ended outdoor environments encourage problem-solving, critical thinking, and social collaboration as students experiment with landforms, water, shade, and natural materials. These intentional landscape interventions transform traditional playgrounds into dynamic laboratories, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong connection to the natural world within a culturally rich and supportive Top End environment.
