Rossi Architects were engaged in to stages by the City of Palmerston to renovate and or develop a new community hall facility. The proposal looked originally renovating an existing building on the site, however further development revealed the best way moving forward was to build a new purpose made facility without the compromising constraints. To manage the budget the RA team came up with an efficient structural framing system forming a welcoming building experience.
The large expansive roof forms and verandahs create a strong welcoming node that is environmentally responsive to the harsh climate and context. The driving element was to create a indoor outdoor facility that could meet various uses and diverse community programs. One large multipurpose space supported by a smaller meeting room space, kitchen and back of house storage and amenities are designed for a seamless and inclusive design outcome.
Fit for purpose materiality and textures were selected being such a highly used community facility. This was highlighted with natural tones and features. Connection to the landscape was also highlighted with the use of expansive glazing supporting the strong connections to the outdoors.
